A UAE high-level delegation took part in the recent session which was held in Geneva, Switzerland, amid mounting concern in the region and beyond over nuclear safety, security as well as proliferation and activities that ignore international treaties and protocols on nuclear transparency and safety, especially after the Fukushima disaster in Japan in 2011, ECSSR’s bulletin noted.
The UAE’s commitment is based on directives by President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan to seek the highest standards of nuclear safety and security. The President’s directives included the development of a peaceful nuclear energy programme to provide safe and green energy by the year 2017.
The UAE’s commitment to global nuclear safety and security was demonstrated by the UAE’s decision to join the NPT in 1995, it noted.
It also cited the ratification of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty in 2000 and the conclusion of the Comprehensive Safeguards Agreement in 2003 and bringing in force the Additional Protocol among the practical steps taken to promote nuclear non-proliferation.
