UN Security Council welcomes ceasefire between Hamas and Israel

WAM New York, Nov 22nd, 2012 (WAM) — The UN Security Council last night welcomed the cease-fire agreement reached between Israel and the Hamas.

The President of the Security Council for this month, the Permanent Representative of India, Ambassador Hardeep Singh Puri, in a statement made on behalf of the members said that Security Council welcomes the ceasefire agreement for lasting and sustainable cessation of hostilities between Gaza and Israel, calling on the two sides to hold on to this agreement.

He also expressed his continued support for the ongoing international efforts to promote this process, praising the efforts made by Egyptian President Mohammed Mursi and other others to achieve the ceasefire.

He expressed his thanks for the efforts made by the United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon in this regard, calling on the international community to provide more urgent humanitarian relief assistance to the residents of the Gaza Strip and to work with the Egyptian and Israeli governments to ensure speedy delivery of this assistance which includes food, fuel and medical treatment.

The statement denounced the loss of civilian lives caused by this situation, stressing on the urgent need to restore full calm in the region.
