UNSC welcomes launch of Syria’s constitutional cmte.

NEW YORK, The UN Security Council said in a presidential statement on Tuesday, the agreement reached by representatives of the Syrian government and opposition groups to launch a credible constitutional committee should spark a political process towards ending the conflict in Syria.

Jerry Matthews Matjila (South Africa), Council President for October, hailed the Secretary General’s announcement on 23 September of the agreement between the Government of Syria and the Syrian Negotiations Commission on a “credible, balanced, and inclusive” Constitutional Committee facilitated by the United Nations, according to the statement.

Emphasizing its strong support for the efforts of the Secretary General’s Special Envoy and for the United Nations initiative to convene the Constitutional Committee’s first meeting in Geneva by 30 October, the Council reaffirmed that the conflict in Syria can only be resolved through full implementation of resolution 2254 (2015), it added.
