Uruguay, Egypt managers’ statements on today’s match

Uruguay’s manager Oscar Tabarez attributed his team’s victory over Egypt with its ability to snatch the three points before the match ended, while Egypt’s manager Hector Cuper stated his teams lose due to not taking full advantage of the chances they had.

“The game was on its way in ending with a draw, but we knew how to achieve our goal in the end, to achieve victory obtain the full points,” Tabarez said in statements following the match Friday. “Egypt performed well in a big match,” he added. He also pointed out the effect of the absence of Egypt’s forward Mohammad Salah.

Tabarez noted that today’s victory breaks the 48-year-old streak of Uruguay not winning their opening match in the World Cup. “This experience makes us learn and develop.” His counterpart Hector Cuper said after the match “we pressured Uruguay to be defensive and created many chances, and performed well with a possibility to end the match in a better result, but we failed to take advantage of the chances we created.” He added “what we were missing was finishing the attacking chances that came close to the goal posts and so we must analyze them” and learn from this experience. Cuper also addressed his players saying the team performed very well during the 90-minutes, and the team did all it can against a big team with world class strikers and defenders, which makes us rejoice receiving a goal set up from a free-kick.

He pointed out the crucial effect the absence of Mohammad Salah from the pitch had on the team, saying that he is “a significant player without any doubt”, but Salah’s shoulder injury had just healed, and he did not want to risk playing too soon besides he will be using him in the upcoming games.

Uruguay was able to snatch a late winner when the defender Jose Gimenez headed a goal into the net in the 89th minute as he met Carlos Sanchez’s free-kick to give Uruguay 3-points before the match ended, and placing them in second place behind Russia with a goal difference lead.
