US calls for coordination between Iraqi, Peshmerga forces

IRBIL, US Under Secretary of Defense for Policy John Rood called on Monday for continuing coordination between the Iraqi and Peshmerga forces.

Rood, during a meeting with Prime Minister of Kurdistan Regional Government Masrour Barzani, said such coordination was important to deter attacks by so-called Islamic State (IS), a government statement said.

Barzani thanked the US for supporting Iraq’s Kurdistan province, saying it contributed to security and stability.

Iraq announced defeat of IS in late 2017, but the terrorist group is still capable of launching attacks inside Iraqi cities and against security forces.

The US-led international coalition aims at including Peshmerga forces to maintain security in disputed areas.

Iraqi and Peshmerga forces, backed by the international coalition, have been launcing joint operations between 2011-14 in disputed areas in Diyala, Kirkuk, Salahuddin and Nineveh.
