WASHINGTON, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo reaffirmed to his Turkish counterpart Mevlut Cavusoglu Washington’s commitment to the UN-led peace process in Syria.
Pomeo, in a phone call with Cavusoglu, discussed with the Turkish top diplomat developments in the Middle East and reaffirmed US commitment to the UN-facilitated peace process in Syria, State Department Spokesperson Morgan Ortagus said in a statement.
Pompeo reiterated the need for NATO to play a greater role in the region, said Ortagus.
Turkey announced Friday it agreed with Russia that a ceasefire in the de-escalation zone in the northwestern Syrian city of Idleb would take effect as of midnight Sunday.
Turkish and Russian Presidents, Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Vladimir Putin respectively, called last Wednesday on importance of ceasing hostilities in Idleb.
