WASHINGTON, The US military command in Africa (AFRICOM) said Tuesday that it had conducted an airstrike on Al-Shabaab militants in coordination with the Somali federal government in the southern region of Cuneo Barrow.
In a statement, the command said that it is estimated one-armed member of the movement was killed without injuring any civilians in the raid, which was carried out on Monday.
The strike demonstrates that the US and Somali forces will continue to take every opportunity to counter and degrade the capacity of Al-Shabaab to plan and conduct attacks, the statement added.
On the other hand, AFRICOM affirmed the injury of a US soldier in an attack by Al-Shabaab on Monday on a military base in southern Somalia.
AFRICOM has conducted 54 airstrikes since the beginning of this year against fighters of the so-called Islamic State (IS) in Somalia and Al-Shabaab targeting fighting sites, infrastructure and equipment.
